more hispanic women are converting to islam

A recent story appeared in the Miami Herald on how more Hispanic women are converting to Islam. In alot of ways, the story is pretty "typical". It was interesting that the author focused on women and ignored male Hispanics altogether. I wonder if anyone has done research to see if there are any gender differences in Latino/Hispanic Muslim conversion experiences?

Asalaamu alaikum.

There do tend to be more articles on women conversions, regardless of culture. I think this is because people are trying to understand (okay, I say "trying" loosly, since I think alot don't want to understand but just want to make a big deal of it) why women would choose a supposedly anti-female way of life. Because mainstream media finds it more fun to write about women making this choice, they do tend to ignore men in general, so it's not surprising that they continue that way when writing about certain cultures or ethnic backgrounds.

Wa alaikum salaam,

Good points all around. Something else I wondered about is how much of the skew in conversion is due to having single men from Muslim countries come to the US to study. (I think there are probably more male students than female students from abroad). And then they meet a woman, encourage her to convert and/or get married. As far as I know, its just annecdotal. I wonder if a more careful study has been done.
